Polish Cuisine | #3 | Street Food

The last part of my articles about Polish cuisine is street food. One of my favorite things to try in a country is actually the street food you can find at every corner 🙂

Let’s remember the first two parts before we start:

If you are ready, let’s get started with the street food

Obwarzanek

This is one of Krakow’s local delicacies. I think Krakow, which is a little different than Poland in general, also stands out in the street foods.

You can think as a ring-shaped pastry made from yeast dough, just like a bagel.

Oscypek

Again a local taste from Krakow. This cheese made of sheep’s milk is served grilled and with some fruit jam if you want. I think it tastes like smoked cheese. Although I try to avoid dairy products (Why?!?), I of course tried oscypek as a cheese lover.

Zapiekanki

This is the Polish version of the pizza … I think it’s a main course rather than a snack. Cheese, olives, salami are placed on the bread which is divided into two halves, baked and served warm. I liked it very much and I think the best was Zapiexy Luxusowe in Warsaw.

Krowka mleczna

This is one of the sine qua non of this list, although not sold on the streets, Poland’s famous caramel candy. I love it very much and still buy 1-2 packages every time I travel to Poland

Polish Street Food 4 – Krowka mleczna

Some of you might remember this candy also from the movie, The Pianist. I think it is a kind of proof that this candies also appear in the movie, to show how important these are for Poland.

Paczki

This is a kind of donut. You can easily find it anywhere, in every bakery. The one I tried was filled with rose marmalade. I can’t say I liked it a lot, but other fillings may be better.

Other pastries

Apart from these, the sweets that you can find in bakeries, but can be considered as standard are:

  • Sernik: Cheesecake
  • Szarlotka: apple pie
  • Ciasta drozdrowe: yeast cake
  • Kremowka or napoleonka: cream cake
  • Karpatka: another local cake with cream filling

I’ve come to the end of my series of foods that should not be returned from Poland without trying. When you go to this beautiful country, which can be visited even just for its cuisine, you should eat a zapiekanki for me too 🙂
