Neuschwanstein Castle and Füssen Travel Guide

Türkçe | English

The beautiful Neuschwanstein Castle is Germany’s most visited tourist spot. It is so beautiful that it even inspired Walt Disney’s logo.

Füssen is the region where this beautiful castle is located. Although the region is famous for Neuschwanstein Castle, the Hohenschwangau Castle, which is located a little below on the lakeside  and the city centre are definitely worth seeing.

How to get to Füssen

This region is in the Bavarian Alps, on the Austrian border. It is very easy to get here by train or bus from Munich. A day trip can be made.

Transportation to the region where the castles are located from Füssen city centre is about 15 minutes by bus.

Accommodation in Füssen

This region, the most touristic region of Germany, of course offers many different options in terms of accommodation. You can make day trips or you can easily find a place to stay here.

Neuschwanstein Castle

It was built by the Bavarian King Ludwig II in 1869. The aim of the king was to build a new castle that would overshadow the beauty of the Hohenschwangau castle below, and I think it certainly achieved this goal 😊

Neuschwanstein Castle

The castle, which was opened for a visit shortly after the death of the king, welcomes about 1.3 million tourists a year. In fine weather this region is literally crowded.

Visiting Neuschwanstein Castle

You need to buy a ticket to enter the castle. If you are going in high season, you can buy your ticket in advance on the website. Otherwise, you are very likely to wait for hours in the ticket line.

The ticket fee for adults (as of 2020) is 13 Euros. There are combi ticket options, including the Hohenschwangau Castle and the Bavarian Kings Museum.

Visiting season

The castle is open for visitors all year. As I said at the beginning, in the high season it gets quite crowded. The winter period is definitely calmer.

I visited this region twice, once at the beginning of February and once at the end of April. Although the snowy February period was quite calm, the crowd pushed my patience in April on a summery weekend 😊

When nature is awakened and everywhere is green, the landscape is much more beautiful. But I still recommend the calm season 😊

How to get to Neuschwanstein Castle

When you reach the area where the castles are located by bus, you can reach the entrance of the castle by walking or by coach. Although the walking path is a bit steep, it is not hard for hikers. It is also a very green and enjoyable path.

The point where the castle can be observed in all its glory is over the bridge called Marienbrücke. When you reach the castle, you see the signs to that bridge. You can reach there by walking from the castle or you can use the buses departing from the lake shore below.

Marienbrücke

This bridge, which is located opposite the castle, was built on the Pöllat canyon and is known by the name of the queen of the period. Those famous castle photos you see on social media, are usually taken on this bridge.

If you prefer to reach here by walking from the castle, you will be accompanied by the wonderful views of the two lakes below and the other castle. I highly recommend using this path😊

On the way to Marienbrücke

This bridge is usually closed in winter, due to snow and ice. During my visit in February, it was open on the first day, because the weather was well for the last two days and melted the ground ice. It was closed again after the falling snow the next day.

During my visit in April, it was so crowded that I could not even go on the bridge. I had to wait a really long queue and did not have the patience 😊

Füssen city centre

Füssen is a classic Bavarian town with colourful houses and cute cafes. The centre is quite small, you stroll around the streets in half an hour and enjoy a coffee in one of the nice cafes afterwards.

You can enjoy the view by taking a tour by the river, and make a peaceful stroll with the sounds of birds, ducks and insects 😊

This place is so close to the Austrian border that you can find yourself crossing the border while walking.

The route I will particularly recommend here is Kalvarienberg. It is necessary to climb a little to get here but you can watch the wonderful view of the lakes and castles from above.

I hope your trip to this region will be very enjoyable for you too 😊

If you have some more time in this Region, you might think About visiting Garmisch-Partenkirchen or Mittenwald, too!
