Alternative Madrid Travel Guide

If you have completed the list in my first Madrid post and you still have time, you can continue your Madrid tour with this one 🙂

Puerta de Alcalá

This is one of the old gates of the city. It is quite well preserved, but in the middle of a busy intersection, all you can do is to take pictures and go back 🙂 You can easily walk here after visiting CentroCentro.

Best Sunset in Madrid: Templo de Debod

This is an ancient Egyptian temple, brought from Egypt. An interesting place to visit but the more important is the park it is located in. This park is a must-see spot for those who want to watch a beautiful sunset. We had good luck and even in December we were able to watch a great sunset.

Where you can find “everything” in Madrid: El Rasto

This is Madrid’s largest flea market, which is only held on Sundays. Not just old, second-hand items here. You can find everything you want from antiques to paintings and souvenirs. You can have a very enjoyable time watching the street artists, keeping up with the locals and eating tapas on the streets. You must remember that it will be very, very crowded!

Santiago Bernabéu Stadium

One stop that football fans should put in the first list. The stadium of Real Madrid is being renewed as of 2019 and it is aimed to end in 2022 but it can still be visited. You can also have a beer in the cafe under the view of the stadium.

Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas

This is the bullfighting arena. Unfortunately, it is still actively used. You have to pay to visit the arena but it is free to visit the museum in the back.

Laie CaixaForum Madrid

This is a museum, but what I really want to mention is the vertical garden grew on the outer façade of the building next to it. Even sitting and watching it is very enjoyable. I wish there were more of such buildings 🙂

Atocha train station

This is more than a standard train station, because it also has a botanical garden inside. If you have the chance, you can stop by 🙂

Wanda Metropolitano Stadium

If the Real Madrid stadium wasn’t enough for you, you can also visit Atletico Madrid’s stadium.

Monasterio del Corpus Christi

If you have read so far, I come with a tip that you will not find everywhere 🙂 This is a monastery and the nuns who live here make cookies and sell them. The interesting thing is that you get your cookie through a rotating mechanism without seeing anyone. If you find the door with the camera on it and press the bell, they answer it from the diaphone and when you say “Cookies”, they open the door. The entrance is a bit dark and creepy, but if you continue, you suddenly hear a sound like “Hola” from a window on your left and you boggle 🙂 There is a price list next to this window where the sound comes from. You place your order and put the money here. The window turns and your cookies and change come. You get delicious cookies without even seeing a single person 🙂

Madrid for art lovers

As I mentioned at the beginning of the article, there are many art museums in Madrid. The most famous are Prado, Reina Sofia and Thyssen-Bornemisza. Visiting these world-famous museums is of course paid, but you can get discounted tickets to visit these three, or you can use the links that I’ve given to check free visiting hours.

Other museums in Madrid

Apart from the above three museums, there are quite a few museums in Madrid. The detailed list can be found on the official website of Madrid.
